New garment factory opened in Kotmale 
Navin Dissanayake, Ministry of Investment, Promotion inspects the new facilities at the Star Garments factory at Kotmale. He is accompanied by Mr. Sukumaran, Managing Director of Star garments is also in the pictureStar Garments, a leading manufacturer of garments, opened a new factory in Kotmale on 23rd June 2007. The new facility was opened by Hon. Navin Dissanayake, Minister of Investment Promotion, who was accompanied by several senior BOI officials. The Minister visited the new facility and was briefed on the processes used by the company in the manufacture of garments by Mr. A. Sukumaran, Managing Director of Star Garments.
Minister Navin Dissanayake also addressed the management and staff of the factory on the importance of their sector to the Sri Lankan economy, stating that the garments industry must continue to maintain high standards to meet the challenges of international competition.
Star Garments is a well-established BOI company, which has been a pioneer investor. Its first plant was set up in 1978 in the BOI’s Katunayake Export Processing Zone.
Star Garments is owned by Multi National, USA and has a presence in New York, Hong Kong, London and China. It is not just a major manufacturer of garments but also an important employer with a staff of 10,000 workers in seven factories spread across the width and breadth of Sri Lanka.
The new factory that has been completed is a Nipayun Sri Lanka project, which is an integral part of the Mahinda Chintana Programme.

This factory falls under the Nipayum Sri Lanka 300 Enterprise Program.
The 300 Enterprises Program launched by the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka reflects this new vision. Ninety five (95) new manufacturing ventures from diversified sectors have been opened to date under this program with 325 projects approved and another 214 agreements were signed.
It is the aim of the Mahinda Chintanaya to set up new industrial ventures as a project to create new employment opportunities.
